Eva Lane Lankford Austin (1889-1970) was the daughter of Zachary and Hester Lankford of Dorchester County Maryland.  She would marry John Edward Austin (1882-1951).  He worked for the railroad as a brakeman then as a conductor.  They lived in Crisfield and then he was transferred to Delmar about 1920.  Eva opened her restaurant about 1928 in the old hotel known as the Whayland Building.  By 1940 he had been transferred again.  The Austin's had one daughter Esther Beatrice Austin who would marry in 1927 Whitney T. Michael.

Sara Leet 1905-1993

1936 Miss Sara Leet, Home Economic Teacher Delmar High School - From Delaware State Archives

Sara Leet was born in 1905 to John Leet and Clara Bell Rose Leet in Campbellsville, Taylor County, Kentucky.  Her father, John Leet, was the son of Isaac Leet and Sarah Freeland Leet originally from Pennsylvania.  Her mother, Clara Bell Rose Leet, was the daughter of Jacob Rose and Ester Snyder Rose again originally from Pennsyvania.  The family farmed and both parents died in 1925.

Sara had sisters; Mae Elizabeth Leet (1900-1980) and Anne Lett ( -1938).  Sara attended the University of Kentucky and graduated in 1928.  She taught school in Kentucky and then came to Delmar, Delaware about 1930.  She taught Home economics at the high school.  Also at that time the home economic instructor was in charge of the cafeteria.  She was very active in social events in Delmar. Shortly after arriving, in 1931, she had to be admitted to Peninsular General Hospital for appendicitis.  After her operation she returned to Kentucky to rest. In the fall she was back to work in Delmar High School.   In 1933 her sister Anne came to Delmar and lived with her.  In 1938 Anne died at Peninsula General Hospital in Salisbury, Maryland.  Her body was returned to Campbellsville Kentucky to her sister Mae.  

Prior to 1925 the John Leet family was living on Saloma Road outside of Campbellsville.  A neighbor (Nancy Wise Newton)  died in 1920 and the Leet girls went down to sit with the dead as it was called at the time.  There Mae would meet Samuel Joseph Newton, son of the deceased, and in January 31, 1924 they would marry.  When Sara died in 1993 the only living relative she had was Clara Newton Head, a niece of hers.

Sara Leet in 1935 taught artificial respiration at Camp Otonka, the YWCA camp on the Indian River.  Not sure which one she is in the picture. 

In January of 1943 Sara married William Bell Lowe (1897-1965) son of Whitefield S. Lowe.  They would live on Monticello Avenue in Salisbury, Md.  until they died.  Shortly after that she transferred to the Wicomico County Maryland School System.  She would teach until 1970 teaching in Pittsville High School and Wicomico senior High School. She taught a total of 42 years in Kentucky, Delaware and Maryland
