Hunting Arbutus use to be one of the rites of spring, when the dogwood bloomed, young people would wander around the woodland looking for the low growing plant. I have not heard of many people doing it recently but certainly back in the 1960s it was still done. I can only assume the enforcement of "No Trespassing" laws is the main factor in not doing this anymore, plus how can a walk outside in the woods looking for a flower compete with the electronic social media world?
