Franklin Elliott and Elizabeth Gordy

Edwin Franklin Elliott (1910- 1943) and Elizabeth Latitia "Libby"  Gordy (1910-2007 )were both under 20 years of age when they married.  He had graduated High School in 1927 and she had just graduated High School in 1928. Frank had an interest in entertainment and was frequently in various High School drama productions.  as the below  1927 photo shows

Frank Elliott was the son of Benjamin Franklin Elliott (1889-1962) and Helen Mae Smith (1889-1954).  Benjamin Franklin Elliott worked for the railroad.  Libby Gordy was the daughter of Edward Ross Gordy ( 1882 -1933)  and Gertrude Phillips Gordy ( -1923). Ross Gordy also worked for the railroad.  His wife, Gertrude Gordy, had died in 1923 of an unusual problem.  She had gone to a dentist to have a tooth extracted and part of the tooth went down her air passage and lodged in her lung. She was sent to John Hopkins Hospital but the tooth chip was so close to her heart they could not operate and after a couple of days she died.    

Frank and Libby lived in Delmar for a short period of time and he worked for the Telephone company.  Eventually they moved to Salisbury.  By 1940 he was working as a Bartender at the Wicomico Hotel.  He died in 1943.  Frank and Libby would have for children; Ann (1929-2003 ), Barbara (1933-2013)  and Patsy (1935-).  Libby would later marry Arthur Potts.  

Undertakers

It was not until the 1920s that undertakers would tend to have just one job.  The Marvel Funeral home in Delmar also did blacksmithing and in Pocomoke, Stevenson and Bros were dealers in Sewing machines and Ace Washing Machines.

1958 Last Run Between Phila and Cape Charles

Barton K Grier, Railway Postal Clerk, actually this is Martin Kingsbury Grier (1899-1968) a newspaper mistake in the name.  He was son of John Grier and Martina Kingsbury Grier.  He married Florence M Harrington and they lived in Harrington and Dover.

The Maryland Cavaliers

Stan Hastings had a popular orchestra called “The Maryland Cavaliers”.  The musicians varied but mainly included Virgil Toadvine, Clay Sterling, Raymond Smith, Bill Ross, and June Tingle, vocalist.  The band was popular in 1939 and up till 1942 when Stan joined the Navy.   Stanley LeRoy Hastings, Jr (1920-1979) was the son of Stanley Leroy Hastings Sr and Helen Marguerite Blades Hastings. He would marry in 1947 to Dorothy Wetzel.  They would have a daughter Lynda Lea Hastings.

Harry Foxwell and Raymond Sullivan 1937

Harry Foxwell and Raymond Sullivan, both of Delmar, returned home yesterday from a trip to Hannibal, Mo., where they delivered a cargo of 1,000 gallons of Eastern Shore oysters. They made the trip west in 43 hours and returned home in 32 hours. above from the Salisbury Times, 9 December 1937

Evelyn Wise, Block Operator For Railroad

In 1965 Evelyn Wise retired from the railroad and moved back to her home in Cape Charles.  She was a block operator and a ticket agent in Delmar, plus she handled calls for the Delmar volunteer Fire Company.  At the time she was one of two female block operators on the Delmarva line, the other being Virginia Gladden who worked in Cape Charles on the evening shift.  A block operator controls the movement of the trains in his/her "block. "  She had radio communication with all the trains and they could not move unless she gave permission or the all clear for them to move. 

Evelyn was born in Delmar in 1901 to Harland E. Lowe and Clara Delma Honey Lowe.  Her father worked for the railroad and shortly after her birth the family was transferred to Cape Charles. She started work for the railroad (Norfolk division ) in 1919 as a switchboard operator.  In 1954 she became a block operator in Cape Charles.  She had taken a furlough from the railroad from 1928 to 1943.  Shortly after being made a block operator the Cape Charles office closed and her and her husband were transferred to Delmar.  They kept their home in Cape Charles.  She had married John Vernon Wise in 1922.  He also worked for the railroad.  He died in 1962.  They had no children.  She would die in 1983.
