Lewes Historical Society joins Smithsonian Magazine’s Museum Day Live Sept. 28

The Lewes Historical Society will offer guided tours free of charge Saturday, Sept. 28, as part of Smithsonian magazine’s ninth annual Museum Day Live! A nationwide event, Museum Day Live offers free admission to visitors presenting a Museum Day Live ticket at a participating museums or cultural institutions.

The event represents Smithsonian’s commitment to make learning and the spread of knowledge accessible to everyone, giving museums across all 50 states the opportunity to emulate the admission policy of the Smithsonian museums in Washington D.C.

“The Lewes Historical Society is thrilled to be a part of Smithsonian magazine’s Museum Day Live! This is a great opportunity for residents and visitors to experience one of our walking tours or enjoy the Lewes Maritime Museum in the Cannonball House," said Lewes Historical Society Executive Director Mike DiPaolo. “We are proud to include historic Lewes in this nationwide event.”

The Lewes Historical Society will offer two free walking tours of historic Lewes Sept. 28: a Maritime Tour at 11 a.m. and a Museum Tour at 1:30 p.m. Admission to the Cannonball House Maritime Museum on the corner of Front and Bank streets will also be free for the day. A fun site-based family scavenger hunt will be available, and information can be picked up at the Ryves Holt House Museum Gift Shop or Cannonball House.

The Maritime Tour will begin at the Ryves Holt House Museum Gift Shop on the corner of Second and Mulberry streets in historic Lewes. As the tour group travels down residential Second Street, docents will share the early history of Lewes and the first explorers who came from across the Atlantic. This tour also includes some of the rich Native American history of Lewes and entrance to the Lewes Life-Saving Station. The tour ends at the Cannonball House Lewes Maritime Museum.
The Museum Tour will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Ryves Holt House Museum Gift Shop. This tour guides visitors through the Lewes Historical Society Complex in the block facing Shipcarpenter Street and edged by West Third Street. The complex holds nine historic buildings dating from 1700 to 1898.

The Museum Day Live ticket is available to download at Smithsonian.com/museumday. Visitors who present the Museum Day Live ticket will gain free entrance for two at participating venues for one day only. One ticket is permitted per household, per email address.
