"Mrs. Josephine Engel of Delmar, widow of William G. Engel, who was a member of the band of the 28th U. S. Volunteer Infantry, has been granted a pension of $30 a month and $6 a month for minor"
So would were the Engels?
William G. Engel was born January 9th 1876 in Pennsylvania. He lived mostly in New York state and on July 11, 1898 he enlisted in the Army to fight in the Spanish American War. He was in the company band in the 9th infantry, the 23rd infantry and 28th infantry. He was discharged in 1899 suffering from an injury in his left side and malaria poisoning. He was a tailor, a musician and a farmer. He married a woman named Cora in New York State and in 1904 William Charles Engel was born. Charles was followed by Dorothy in 1907. He begin receiving a pension from the government in 1908. The marriage broke up and William married Josephine about 1916.
Maria Josephine was born in Cuba in 1890 and in 1913 migrated to New York. In 1920 William and Josephine were living in Victory, Cayuga county New York which is north of Auburn. On June 2, 1919 they had a son named Joseph V. Engel. Sometime between 1920 and 1927 they moved to Delmar Maryland. He would die on December 26, 1927. It is unknown where he is buried. It would take several months after William's death before the government would give Josephine and Joseph a pension. They are shown as being outside of in Delmar Maryland in the 1930 census.
After 1930 they moved to Florida. Joseph V. Engel would join the Army Air Corp prior to WWII and would stay in the service thru Korea and Vietnam, retiring from the Air Force as a Chief warrant Officer. He would die in 1971. It is unknown what happen to Josephine.
