The Delmar Rest Stop

For a number of years in the 1980s Rep. Carroll Cordrey pushed for a 1.9 million dollar tourist center to build in Delmar.  By 1985 the dream had been reduced to a $50,000 rest stop with picnic tables and a couple portable restrooms.  Built about two miles north of Delmar in a wooded section, it gave travelers a chance to pull off the road, refresh themselves, let the kids run for bit, and maybe car pools would park their car there.
As is often said “no good deed should go unpunished” and so it was with the Delmar rest stop.  Within a couple of years it was being used for drug deals, sex solicitation, homosexual men would park and hang out waiting for a pickup, the wooded area was being used for public sex.  The Delaware State Police were often called to it.
About 1993 a fence was put up to the entranceway and the rest stop was closed.
