Harold Hearn

above from the Salisbury Times July 1, 1940
Harold Alexander Hearn (1905-1951) was someone from Delmar whose name was usually associated with terrorizing women, Habitually disorderly, vagrancy, larceny etc.  He did do a spell in the Army during WW2 with Co. C,  711 Railway Operating Engineer Bn. but after his discharge in 1945 went back to his old ways. He is buried in St Stephens cemetery.

It is interesting how in the 1930s and 1940s how closely the railroad police (Oscar M. Thomas) and the town police (Arthur L. Godfrey) worked together.

Clara Marvel and Charles Mahoney 1889

Above from the Wilmington Morning News February 25, 1889

Clara Elizabeth Marvel (1872-1950) was the daughter of William S Marvel, the undertaker in Delmar, and his wife Sallie Hearn Marvel.  Charles Henry Mahoney (1863-1944) was the son of Henry M. Mahoney (1826-1889) and Angelina Wilkerson Mahoney (1836-1871) of Milford.  The couple would move to Glenolden, Pennsylvania where Charles would work as a telegraph operator for the B and O railroad, retiring in 1932.  After Charles passed away Clara would move back to Delmar and take up residence in the house at 7 E. Jewell St that her sister, Mary Agnes, and Brother-in-law, Clarence Hezekiah Matthews, had owned.  Both Clara and Charles are buried in St Stephens cemetery as are most of the Marvel family.

John Parsons and Ellen Hastings

Miss Lavinia E. Hastings, daughter of Hezekiah Hastings, a wealthy farmer living near town eloped with her father’s hired hand, John G. Parsons, on Wednesday night, and they were made man and wife at Salisbury.  The irate father made an attempt to catch them here.

Above from the Wilmington Morning News 21 January 1888
The elopement may have killed him as he died in 1888.  Lavina Ellen (1862-1931) stayed married to John G. Parson (1861-1951) and had a daughter, Clara Ellen.  John was the son of John Robert and Julia Truitt Parsons.  John,  after his marriage, worked on the railroad, tried farming, was a drug salesman and ended up as care taker / gardener at the John B. Parsons home for the aged in Salisbury.

Hezekiah (Kiah) Hastings' wife, Mary Ellen, was the daughter of Winder Hastings one of the owners of the land on which Delmar sits.
