Miss Lavinia E. Hastings, daughter of Hezekiah
Hastings, a wealthy farmer living near town eloped with her father’s hired hand,
John G. Parsons, on Wednesday night, and they were made man and wife at
Salisbury. The irate father made an
attempt to catch them here.
Above from the Wilmington Morning News 21 January
1888
The elopement may have killed him as he died in 1888. Lavina Ellen (1862-1931) stayed married to John G. Parson (1861-1951) and had a daughter, Clara Ellen. John was the son of John Robert and Julia Truitt Parsons. John, after his marriage, worked on the railroad, tried farming, was a drug salesman and ended up as care taker / gardener at the John B. Parsons home for the aged in Salisbury. Hezekiah (Kiah) Hastings' wife, Mary Ellen, was the daughter of Winder Hastings one of the owners of the land on which Delmar sits.
