Shoe rationing

Ad Salisbury Times February 1943  Nock's Shoes Salisbury MD

Due to a shortage of leather and rubber during WWII, shoes were rationed beginning February 9, 1943. Shoe purchase was limited to three times a year, with specific expiry dates for each. Manufacturers could only make shoes in four colors: black, white, brown and russet. Two-toned shoes and shoes with any sort of embellishment were prohibited. The crowded shop photo below shows a shoe store on the last day for War Ration shoe coupon 17, Washington, DC, June 1943.
