Up until the time the stitching machine was invented most of the flour made was packed in barrels. 196 pounds of flour filled a barrel and an eighth barrel was 14 pounds. Gradually the bag or sack replaced the barrel and today most flour is sold in paper bags. The logo of the older flour companies however is usually circular and that is because the logo was stamped on the head of the barrel the flour was packed in.
